Disclosure and Compliance

How to disclose affiliate relationships clearly and where disclosures should appear.

1 min readUpdated 2026-09-26

Lesson objectives

  • Write a clear disclosure
  • Place disclosures where readers see them

Why disclose?

Readers deserve to know when you may earn money from a recommendation. Consumer-protection regulators in many countries, such as the US Federal Trade Commission, expect clear and conspicuous disclosure, and most affiliate programmes require it.

Good practice

  • Place a short disclosure near affiliate links, not only in the footer.
  • Use plain language: 'We may earn a commission if you buy through links on this page.'
  • Disclose in videos, emails and social posts too, not just on your site.
  • Keep a full disclosure page explaining how you make money.

Action steps

  1. Add a contextual disclosure to every page with affiliate links

Checklist

  • Disclosures near links
  • Disclosure page published
  • Emails and videos disclosed
