Lesson objectives

  • Write a tracking plan
  • List the events each funnel step needs

Start with questions

Tracking everything creates noise. Start with the decisions you need to make: Which channel brings customers? Which step loses the most people? Which offer earns the most per visitor? Then track the events that answer those questions.

A simple tracking plan

  • Event name (e.g. lead_submitted, checkout_started, purchase).
  • Where it fires (page, form, button).
  • Useful details to record with it (form name, product, value).
  • Which question it helps answer.
  • Who is responsible for maintaining it.
  1. page_view
  2. lead_submitted
  3. checkout_started
  4. purchase
